One of the best ways to help students build comprehension of story problems is to allow them to create their own. With this in mind, I gave my students the opportunity to create their own story problem with a Christmas or winter theme. I only asked that they include a fraction in the problem.
After I introduced the assignment, I gave them an example. (They love to watch me draw.)
They were excited to begin writing and drawing their own story problems. The Christmas season gave them lots of ideas.
